Rural Crested Butte

There is much to discover outside the towns of Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte. Rural Crested Butte offers a variety of areas and neighborhoods to explore. A few miles north of Mt. Crested Butte lies the ghost town of Gothic, Colorado. In the early 1900s, a Western State professor visited Gothic and acknowledged that the area had a very diverse ecosystem. In 1928, Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) was born and is now home to one of the largest annual migrations of field biologists.  Taylor Reservoir, located just up the road from Almont, is another main attraction in Gunnison County. The Taylor Park Marina offers boat rentals, fishing equipment, camping supplies, a bait shop, liquor store and restaurant. Miles and miles of mountain biking, hiking, dirt biking and 4-wheeling surround this area making for all around fun! The Taylor River has world class fly fishing and river rafting, and eventually meets up with the East and Gunnison Rivers making for a very popular summer destination at the Three Rivers Resort.  There are so many things to do and places to explore in this beautiful valley. Whether it is the summer or winter that brings you here, the beauty will keep you coming back for more!

If living in town is not for you, there are many wonderful neighborhoods that offer room to stretch and offer expansive views of the surrounding mountains. The Club at Crested Butte, located in the Skyland neighborhood, just a mile south of town, has a Robert Trent Jones II, 18 hole golf course along with a fully equipped club house offering a top-of-the-line gym, lap pool, tennis courts, and full restaurant. Six miles south of town you’ll discover Crested Butte South, which is the largest subdivision and offers a small commercial area complete with restaurants, dental office, pre-school, and more.  CB South also offers a park, ice skating rink, and groomed cross-country trails in the winter.  From CB South you can head out Cement Creek Road where you’ll find miles of hiking and biking trails.  A little further south and on the west side of Highway 135 you will find the private 35+ acre subdivisions of Red Mountain Ranch, The Reserve at East River, and Danni Ranch. These are only a few of the 35-acre subdivisions located across the north end of the valley.   Working your way back towards the town of Crested Butte, you come across East River Ranches and Hidden River Ranch, both of which enjoy fishing rights on the East River. Nearing town, if you take a right onto Brush Creek Road, you are able to drive through some smaller, more intimate neighborhoods like Larkspur and Buckhorn Ranch. North of Crested Butte, you will have the opportunity to head up Washington Gulch Road to Meridian Lake Meadows, Meridian Lake Park & Pristine Point. Home to Meridian Lake, these three subdivisions have fishing rights on the reservoir and can enjoy non-motorized activity on the lake in the summer and skating in the winter.  Also, this area is a gateway to the backcountry and Paradise Divide.  There is a place and a setting for everyone in this spectacular mountain valley.
